Mount Meru is the third highest peak in Africa and is the second highest mountain in Tanzania at 4,568m. The mountain is located within Arusha National Park, Tanzania’s gem. This prime location gives trekkers the chance to spot some of wildlife that inhabits the area. This Mountain is the best mountain for acclimatization prior to Mount Kilimanjaro.

Itinerary
Day 0: Arrival in Arusha Town
You will be picked up from the airport (Kilimanjaro International Airport/ Arusha Airport) and be transferred to your hotel in the town of your choice where you will rest and have a short pre-climb briefing from your Guide who will as well check your gears.
Day 1: Momela Gate to Meriakamba Hut

Hiking Time: 4-6 hours
Habitat: Montane Forest.
We drive from Arusha to the Momela Gate. After the registration procedures at the Gate our walk will begin with fully armed ranger escorting us. We may be seeing along the way the wild animals, mostly herbivores grazing along the way. Elephants, Zebras, and Giraffes, Monkeys, Antelopes and Warthogs are common. Browsing Giraffes are also hard to miss amongst the tall trees. With a keen eye we may be seeing different bird species on the forest canopy. We will hike for 4-6 hours before reaching the first camp site where will rest and have our dinner.
Day 2: Meriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut

Hiking Time: 3-5 hours
Habitat: Forest and Moorland
The walk from Meriakamba Hut to the Saddle below Little Meru is a short but a steep one.
The walk will take us slowly along the ridge for a spectacular view of the Meru Crater and the impressive Ash Cone. After hot lunch at Saddle Hut we can make a short climb to the summit of Little Meru (3,820m) for superb views just before sunset.
Day 3: Saddle Hut to Summit to Town
Elevation (m): 3,570 m to 4,565m to 2,514m
Elevation (ft.): 14,977ft to 11,712 ft. to 8,250ft
Distance: 5 km up to 13 km down
Hiking Time: 12 – 14 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert Moorland and Montane forest.
We start very early around 01:30am to climb steeply to Rhino Point (3,800m) and on to Cobra Point (4,350m). We reach the summit (4,566m) on time for sunrise there is a possibility to see Kilimanjaro Peak above the clouds. The final part of the climb is along a spectacular narrow ridge line between the sheer inner cliffs and the sloping outer wall of the crater.
We take a short rest and brunch at Saddle Hut before continuing the descent to the Momela Gate. The returning transfer will be waiting at Momela Gate to pick us back to the hotel in Arusha Town.
Day 4: Departure
This is the end of your trip in Tanzania. You can proceed with any other excursions as per your interest and booking. Otherwise your driver will drive you back to the airport a couple of hours before your flight departures. We are glad to have spent time with you. Thank you and we hope to see you again!
